gTLD
is known as generic top level domain which is managed by the internet assigned
numbers authority (IANA). gTLD appears to the internet users as the suffix at
the end of a domain Name, For example- www.example.com
where .com is the gTLD.
.com,
.info, .net, .org, .biz, .name and .pro are considered most popular gTLD but
few gTLDs are nominated as restricted generic top level domains because
registration of that domain name requires proof of eligibility and that should
follow all guidelines.
At the beginning, RFC 920 had started .com,
.edu, .gov, .mil and .org as general purpose domains. .Net was the first gTLD
which included in this list. Now .com, .net and .org were more popular and were
start use for any purpose.
Unrestricted gTLD:
Unrestricted
generic top-level domains are domains that are available for registrations by
any person or organization for any use. The important gTLDs in this group are
com, net, org, and info. However, info was the only one of these, and the
first, that was explicitly chartered as unrestricted. The others initially had
a specific target audience. However, due to lack of enforcement, they acquired
an unrestricted character, which was later grandfathered.
